All of the timber processed by Big River Timbers is sourced from sustainably managed plantation and regrowth hardwood forests in North East NSW. Harvesting operations are controlled and managed by NSW State Government departments, to ensure that these hardwood forests are harvested to only extract their annual incremental growth, thus ensuring log supply in perpetuity. A truly renewable resource.
As one of the highest value adders in the hardwood industry, employment per log processed is more than 2.5 times that of traditional sawmilling operations. In addition to this, the peeling of thin veneers through the rotary veneer plant, maximises yield and ensures minimal wastage.
Big River Timbers also leads the industry in commercially value adding plantation hardwood timbers, traditionally used in low value add products and markets. Our unique peeling process allows this resource to used in premium products, not practical in many other timber processing operations.
Capital expenditure at the manufacturing plant has focused in recent times on the further utilisation and maximisation of both plantation and small regrowth resource, which are clearly becoming a more important component of the timber mix as further forests have been set aside as national parks. This commitment to state of the art processing equipment is fundamental to the future of the business, and signifies the intent of Big River Timbers to lead the industry.
